Location
SISU is based in the most deprived and overpopulated township in Myanmar, Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone. The youths here are marginalised for several reasons:
- Hlaing Thar Yar is the most populous Township in Yangon and has a highly transient demographic
- With conflict and poverty forcing many rural families to migrate back to Hlaing Thar Yar to look for work, the education prospects for the children of these families remain limited
- The area has inadequate physical and social infrastructure
- The median age is 25.6 years
- Child labour and exploitation are commonplace
- Hlaing Thar Yar has a high rate of human trafficking
The issues facing Hlaing Thar Yar youth are also evident in other regions across Myanmar.
In the midst of this is SISU Vocational Training Centre, also equipped to accommodate people with disabilities. Our simulated classrooms are designed to introduce our trainees to the world of work. The centre has a capacity for up to 500 trainees at any one time. All trainees have access to computers and a library. Table tennis, badminton, basketball and other sports facilities are also well used.
